306.  Noble, Richard.

Utopias: documents of contemporary art. – London: The MIT Press, 2009.

700

N 73

Utopian projects aspire to a better world but their forms may only ever live in our imaginations. Furthermore, we are as haunted by their failures as we are inspired by the aspiration to repair the failed and build the new. This anthology contextualizes art's current engagement with the utopian in relation to political thought, viewing the utopian as a key term in the artistic lineage of modernity. It illuminates how the exploration of utopian themes in art today contributes to our understanding of contemporary cultures and the possibilities for shaping their futures.

It exudes Cook's delight and catholic appetite for the architectural. Readers are provided with perceptive insights at every turn. The book features some of the greatest and most intriguing drawings by architects, ranging from Frank Lloyd Wright, Heath-Robinson, Le Corbusier, and Otto Wagner to Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Arata Isozaki, Eric Owen Moss, Bernard Tschumi, and Lebbeus Woods; as well as key works by Cook and other members of the original Archigram group.

311. Mostafavi, Mohsen.

Ecological Urbanism. – Switzerland: Lars Müller, 2013.

720

M 88

While climate change, sustainable architecture, and green technologies have become increasingly topical, issues surrounding the sustainability of the city are much less developed. The premise of the book is that an ecological approach is urgently needed both as a remedial device for the contemporary city and an organizing principle for new cities. Ecological urbanism approaches the city without any one set of instruments and with a worldview that is fluid in scale and disciplinary approach. Design provides the synthetic key to connect ecology with an urbanism that is not in contradiction with its environment. The book brings together design practitioners and theorists, economists, engineers, artists, policy makers, environmental scientists, and public health specialists, with the goal of reaching a more robust understanding of ecological urbanism and what it might be in the future.

316. Stallabrass, Julian.

Documentary: documents of contemporary art. - London: Whitechapel Gallery, 2013.

700

S 81

Documentary has undergone a marked revival in recent art, following a long period in which it was a denigrated and unfashionable practice. This has in part been led by the exhibition of photographic and video work on political issues at Documenta and numerous biennials and, since the turn of the century, issues of injustice, violence and trauma in increasing zones of conflict. Aesthetically, documentary is now one of the most prominent modes of art-making, in part assisted by the linked transformation and recuperation of photography and video by the gallery and museum world. Unsurprisingly, this development, along with the close attention paid to photojournalism and mainstream documentary-making in a time of crisis, has been accompanied by a rich strain of theoretical and historical writing on documentary.

319. Hollein, Hans.

Hans Hollein. – Ostfildern: Hatje Cantz, 2012.

R720

H 75

The only Austrian winner of the Pritzker Prize (1985) and president of the architecture biennale in Venice, the Viennese architect Hans Hollein (born 1934) has been a leading exponent of postmodernism in architecture. Yet his global stature as an architect has overshadowed his design work of the 1970s and 1980s and his artistic work of the 1960s and 1970s, despite past exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. This richly illustrated, comprehensive catalogue, and the exhibition it accompanies at the Neue Galerie in Graz, is the first retrospective of Hollein as a truly universal artist and a renaissance man for the digital age. It is also the first to present Hollein's oeuvre as a whole: his work as artist, designer and architect, but also as theoretician, curator, teacher and collaborator with such artists as Christo and Claes Oldenburg.

H 66

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts, we have not used OCR (Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc. We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

322. Geddes, Patrick.

Cities in Evolution: an introduction to the town planning movement and to the study of civics. – Miami: HardPress Publishing, 2012.

720

G 31

In matters civic, as in simpler fields of science, it is from facts surveyed and interpreted that we gain our general ideas of the direction of Evolution, and even see how to further this; since from the best growths selected we may rear yet better ones. Furthermore, the book makes an appeal even to the professed town-planner, though he already knows the facts it contains. For its definite principle is that we must not too simply begin, as do too many, with fundamentals as of communications, and thereafter give these such aesthetic qualities of perspective and the rest, as may be, but above all things, seek to enter into the spirit of our city, its historic essence and continuous life. Our design will thus express, stimulate, and develop its highest possibility, and so deal all the more effectively with its material and fundamental needs.

323. Fisher, Thomas R.

In the Scheme of Things: Alternative Thinking on the Practice of Architecture. – Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2006.

720

F 58

One of the field’s most innovative thinkers reconsiders the purpose and practice of architecture. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, architecture is in a state of crisis. Numbed by an ugly and shoddily constructed built environment and outraged by the cost of high-profile design projects, the public has become disinterested in and contemptuous of architecture as both a profession and an art. At the same time, some of our most creative designers have isolated themselves from the tastes and needs of mainstream society, reflecting a similar malaise found in design and architecture schools around the country. In this troubling climate, Thomas R. Fisher—who challenged architects as editorial director of Progressive Architecture, becoming recognized as one of the field’s most original thinkers—contends that the purpose and prospects of architectural practice must be reconsidered and reenergized. In the Scheme of Things looks at architecture’s need to respond creatively and meaningfully to the extraordinary changes affecting the profession now, changes that include the global economy, the advent of computer-aided design, and the growing disconnection between design schools, architectural practice, and the public.

324. Edwards, Andres R.

The Sustainability Revolution: Portrait of a Paradigm Shift. - Gabriola Island: New Society Publishers, 2005.

720

E 26

Sustainability has become a buzzword in the last decade, but its full meaning is complex, emerging from a range of different sectors. In practice, it has become the springboard for millions of individuals throughout the world who are forging the fastest and most profound social transformation of our time—the sustainability revolution. The book analyzes sustainability as defined by each of these sectors in terms of the principles, declarations and intentions that have emerged from conferences and publications, and which serve as guidelines for policy decisions and future activities.

325. Sennett, Richard.

Flesh and Stone: the body and the city in western civilization. - New York; London: W.W. Norton & Company, 1996.

709

S 47

Here, Sennet examines the relationship between the human body and the urban environment it inhabits, looking at the differing attitudes to nudity, burial, sanctuary and urban planning in ancient Greece and Rome, Medieval and Renaissance Europe, and concluding with a fuller analysis of how the link between flesh and stone has altered with the advances in science and medicine. It is, as the author says in the introduction, "more than an historical catalogue of physical sensations in urban space", offering fresh insights and ideas for anyone interested in the city or civic life.

327. Sennett, Richard.

The Uses of Disorder: Personal Identity and City Life. - New York; London: W.W. Norton & Company, 1993.

709

S 47

The distinguished social critic Richard Sennett here shows how the excessively ordered community freezes adults—both the young idealists and their security-oriented parents—into rigid attitudes that stifle personal growth. He argues that the accepted ideal of order generates patterns of behavior among the urban middle classes that are stultifying, narrow, and violence-prone. And he proposes a functioning city that can incorporate anarchy, diversity, and creative disorder to bring into being adults who can openly respond to and deal with the challenges of life.

328. Sennett, Richard.

The Conscience of the Eye: the Design and Social Life of Cities. - New York; London: W.W. Norton & Company, 1993.

709

S 47

From the assembly halls of Athens to the Turkish baths of New York's Lower East Side, from eighteenth-century English gardens to the housing projects of Harlem--a study of the physical fabric of the city as a mirror of Western society and culture.

331. Forman, Richard T. T.

Urban Regions: Ecology and Planning Beyond the City. – Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2008.

720

F 76

With land planning, socioeconomics and natural systems as foundations, this book, first published in 2008, combines urban planning and ecological science in examining urban regions. Writing for graduate students, academic researchers, planners, conservationists and policy makers, and with the use of informative urban-region color maps, Richard Forman analyzes 38 urban regions from 32 nations, including London, Chicago, Ottawa, Brasilia, Cairo, Seoul, Bangkok, Canberra, and a major case study of the Greater Barcelona region. Alternative patterns of urbanization spread (including sprawl) are evaluated from the perspective of nature and people, stating land-use principles extracted from landscape ecology, transportation and hydrology.

720

C 79

The great revolutionary architect's probing analysis of urban problems and their origins, and his bold solutions, which include the "Voisin" scheme for the center of Paris, and the more developed scheme for a "City of Three Million Inhabitants." 333. Moneo, Rafael.

The Freedom of the Architect. – Michigan: University of Michigan, 2003.

720

M 81

In The Freedom of the Architect, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rafael Moneo speaks on form, language and history, broadly, and as represented in examples of his own work. He elaborates on how architects today have disassociated their work from the environment, creating autonomous landmarks with little relationship to their surroundings and how the architect as individual challenges the role of history in the built environment. Moneo's reflections on his own work include: the City Hall of Murcia, Spain, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebastian, Spain, and the acclaimed Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles. Spanish born, Madrid-based Moneo's work unites tradition and innovation. He has developed an extensive body of work as an architectural critic and theoretician and his writing has appeared in Oppositions and Lotus. He is a committed educator, having chaired the Harvard Graduate School of Design and lectured internationally.

709

Н 632

335. Mumovic, Dejan.

A Handbook of Sustainable Building Design & Engineering. - New York: Earthscan Publications Ltd., 2009.

720

M 94

"A Handbook of Sustainable Building Engineering" covers: how to design, engineer and monitor a building in a manner that minimises the emissions of greenhouse gases; how to adapt the environment, fabric and services of existing and new buildings to climate change; and, how to improve the environment in and around buildings to provide better health, comfort, security and productivity, and provides crucial expertise on monitoring the performance of buildings once they are occupied.
The authors explain the principles behind built environment engineering, and offer practical guidance through international case studies. This work offers highly practical coverage of design, engineering, adaptation and monitoring of sustainable buildings. Written by leading international experts, it is an essential toolkit for building engineers and advanced students.

341. Utzon, Jorn.

The Architect's Universe. – Esbjerg: Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, 2008.

720

U 95

Jorn Utzon is a Danish architect, yet he has become indelibly identified with Sydney, Australia, because of his landmark design for the Sydney Opera House. This catalogue for the first major retrospective of his work shows the scope of a career that has stretched almost 50 years, from his own Hellebaek house (1952) to Can Feliz on Majorca (1994). The essence of Utzon's architecture is a fusion of form and structure--or to put it differently, the structure is the architecture. The sources of his inspiration come mainly from nature and from the visual universes of other cultures like that of the Mayas, which in Utzon's reworking are transformed into an integrated formal idiom that privileges harmony between detail and totality. An interview and numerous essays illuminate the career of the international master, awarded the Pritzker Prize for 2003.

Kahn's sketches drawn while speaking and number of previously unpublished images of the architect lecturing complement the text. Text in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

343. Macaulay, James.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh: a biography. - United States: W. W. Norton, 2010.

720

M 12

Charles Rennie Mackintosh was Scotland’s greatest architect and arguably one of the world’s most admired. He had far fewer commissions than his contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright, but with a few bold and innovative structures—the Glasgow School of Art and Hill House among them—he had a profound influence on art and architecture at the turn of the twentieth century. Like Wright, Mackintosh designed in totality, down to the furniture and fabrics used in his structures, and he was influenced by the Japanese, particularly in the simplicity of his designs and themes from nature.

Else/Where: Mapping: New Cartographies of Networks and Territories. - United States: University of Minnesota Design Institute, 2006.

720

A 16

ELSE/WHERE: MAPPING charts the ascendancy of mapping as a powerful interdisciplinary strategy, one that links people and places, data and organizations, and physical and virtual environments. Traditionally written by history's victors, maps are gaining new currency in our information-saturated age as a means of making arguments and processes visible. Mapping technologies today are as diverse as the agendas driving them: social networks are mapped with dynamic digital interfaces; buildings are mapped with lasers; cities and regions are mapped by satellite.
Illustrated with nearly 300 images, from archival woodcuts to Web-based maps and GPS drawings, ELSE/WHERE: MAPPING explores how cartographic techniques are being adapted to map the emerging landscapes of electronic communication. It showcases cutting-edge projects in graphic and industrial design, art, architecture, and technology by an international roster of writers, artists, and designers at the forefront of locative media practice.

A 90

An indispensable guide for art-world neophytes and seasoned professionals alike, the best-selling ArtSpeak returns in a revised and expanded third edition, illustrated in full color. Nearly 150 alphabetical entries—30 of them new to this edition—explain the who, what, where, and when of postwar and contemporary art. These concise mini-essays on the key terms of the art world are written with wit and common sense by veteran critic Robert Atkins. More than eighty images, most in color, illustrate key works of the art movements discussed, making ArtSpeak a visual reference, as well as a textual one. A timeline traces world and art-world events from 1945 to the present day, and a single-page ArtChart provides a handy overview of the major art movements in that period.
